Joseph Tan, a country advisor (or known as CEO as well) of Lowe Lintas Indonesia, came to my desk few nights ago when I was working on storyline for TVC ad of a beverage product. It rarely occurs, a person with that high position came and have a little chit-chat with an intern like me.
I was sitting with my fellow art director partner, discussing some changes in the latest storyline version when he suddenly came to my desk. First, I wondered what did he wanted to talk about with us, but when he started to talk, that little conversation that we had become something precious for me.
Okay, actually it wasn't a small talk. We were talking for about 30 minutes, sharing all things that we should know about advertising world. I'm gonna share you some of important things that I heard that night.
1. "If you can't be a superstar, and stuck just being good, you can't survive in this industry".
This is the first point that I really remember and caught me into a big question inside my head. "Am I a superstar?".
Yes, Joe (Joseph Tan - Red), told us that if you can't be a superstar then you can't survive in this industry. You will stuck at the age of 40 just become a mid-level copywriter, doing brochures.
That question stuck in my head until today, and also becomes a booster for myself to become more than just a 'good' copywriter, but a 'superstar' copywriter, and I have a faith on myself that I can be more than just a 'good' copywriter and also be more than just a 'superstar' copywriter.
I'll be 'the best' copywriter.
2. "Creativity is a talent."
Joe said that those who works at Lowe is talented people. They have this talent to create something extraordinary with their creativity.
Well, everybody can work at Lowe. Everybody with talent as good as Andrea Billy or Anton Jaya, he said.
3. "If you can't be a Creative Director in top 5 agencies in Indonesia, it's better for you to get yourself another job"
It was a sarcastic words from him, but also a challenge for me. He said that you can measure how good you are by seeing this. If you can't be a CD in top 5 agencies, then you are not fit in advertising world.
Well this words are pretty argumentative, but I take this as a challenge for me to proof it that I can be someone who can fit in the industry by becoming a CD in one of those 5 top agencies.
Well small talk with Joe really boost myself, that I can proof it. I can be more than just good, that I can be the best copywriter in Indonesia.
That cannes lions will announce my name as a gold winner someday.
One day, my name will be on the top list of the creative rank in Asia.
And I will do whatever it takes to learn, how to be the best.
I believe in that.
